CHENNAI: On Wednesday, the Rotary Club of Anna Nagar installed M.K. Chetty as the new President in its silver jubilee year. And, as reflected by the sentiments of all the club members present, “it was a time for the club to stand behind one of its founding members.”

Speaking at the ceremony, outgoing President Abhijit Sett said that while the baton of leadership changes each year the ideals of the club did not, and that in fact they have got stronger with each passing year. This is what continues to inspire Rotarians, he said, as he reflected on the year gone by.

Introducing Mr. Chetty, he said: “The incoming president is goodness personified,” and then added jokingly that, “we were on the brink of suing him for avoiding the post when he finally accepted.” Mr. Chetty is a builder by profession and a partner of Srijees Construction. He is also a director of Innotech Polymers (Pvt) Ltd., Colombo. “Remarkable as a person, remarkable he will be as President,” were the outgoing president’s concluding remarks.

Mr. Chetty, in his inaugural speech, said, “My team plans to make an impact on the club and the public as a whole.”

The chief guest of the event was Asoka Somaratne, a former member of the Sri Lankan Parliament and an advocate of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Mr. Somaratne, also a former student of the Madras Christian College, Tambaram, opened his speech by saying that Mr. Chetty was a man who believed in service before self. He then went on to give the audience a detailed account of the genesis and evolution of the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict.
