ANTI-FLY DRIVE: Corporation workers spray insecticide on garbage removed from the Koyambedu Wholesale Market on Wednesday.

Chennai: The Chennai Corporation on Wednesday slapped a legal notice, charging the private firm, which holds the contract for waste management at Koyambedu Wholesale Market, with violating the public health norms.

The action followed a surprise check on the status of the hygiene in the complex by Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni during which he found mounds of rotting vegetables and fruits at the wholesale market.

The management of the wholesale market rests with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). On Wednesday, the Corporation workers pitched in to clear the piles of decaying garbage as the civic agency is keen to control the breeding of houseflies. The garbage was isolated and insecticide sprayed to kill maggots.

Anti-fly drive

All assistant health officers in the Corporation’s 10 zones have been instructed to monitor the anti-fly campaign. Insecticide would be sprayed in locations such as garbage transfer stations, slums and places with high fly density. Houseflies thrive in damp, humid weather.

Bleaching powder would be sprinkled after garbage is cleared. About 850 workers will be involved in the campaign. The Corporation has stocked about 2,500 litres of pyrethrum, 1500 kg of K-othrin, 1,850 litres of dichloro wash and 1,000 kg of chemical fly-bait. These stocks can last for three months.
