Chennai: Mayor M. Subramanian presented certificates to a group of street food vendors from Besant Nagar and Nungambakkam at the valedictory of a food safety training programme on Wednesday. “Display the certificates and wear the apron, gloves and cap given to you. Your business will double as customers will feel happy to buy hygienically prepared food,” he told the vendors. He also urged them to maintain personal and environmental hygiene. The street food safety training programme was conducted by the Women’s Christian College, as part of a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare project. Vendors were encouraged to keep hands clean, cut nails and use unadulterated oil to cook. About 45 vendors from Elliot’s Beach and parts of Nungambakkam were trained. Folk theatre forms as villupaatu and puppetry were used to introduce hygiene concepts to the vendors. Gomathy Shivaji, food safety programme coordinator in Chennai, requested the Mayor to set up street food zones that had access to facilities such as safe drinking water.
