Stalin takes stock of development works

Many projects are under way at a total cost of Rs. 2,496 crore

MADURAI: The Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration, M.K. Stalin, has instructed the Madurai Corporation officials to implement all works taken under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission (JNNURM) within the stipulated time-frame.

After reviewing various works taken up at a cost of Rs. 2,496 crore at the Collectorate here on Friday, the Minister expressed satisfaction over the pace of on-going projects.

He discussed projects worth Rs. 520 crore sanctioned by the Union Government, such as the second drinking water pipeline project, construction of check-dams across the Vaigai river to augment drinking water resources, implementation of solid waste management (SWM), improvement of living conditions for the urban poor and renovation of heritage sites in the city.

Second pipeline

Mr. Stalin instructed the officials to complete the second pipeline project by August next year. He also asked them to float tenders at the earliest for SWM scheme, check-dams and improvement of living conditions of urban poor schemes.

Later, he inspected the Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand and the beautification works around Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

The Mayor, G. Thenmozhi; Ministers, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and A. Tamilarasi; the Secretary for Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, K. Deenabandu; the Madurai Collector, S.S. Jawahar; the Commissioner for Municipal Administration, Niranjan Mardi; Director of Town Panchayats, K. Gopal, and Joint Commissioner of Municipal Administration, Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana, were among those who participated in the discussion.
