DIG (Prisons) commits suicide

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons B.S. Abbai (53), who was in charge of the Bangalore Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara, hanged himself at his official residence on the jail premises here on Saturday.

The police said Mr. Abbai locked himself in his room in the afternoon and hanged himself with a plastic rope from a window.

When he did not come out of his room for a long time, the orderlies on duty at his house and the Jail Superintendent, along with members of Mr. Abbai’s family, broke open the door of the room around 4.30 p.m. and found him dead.

Police said Mr. Abbai had left a note stating that he had not done anything wrong or allowed prisoners to do any wrong.

He stated that only he was responsible for his death. He is also said to have apologised to his family for taking the extreme step.

Highly placed sources in the police told The Hindu that Mr. Abbai had been depressed for the past few days after learning that he was likely to be suspended for certain alleged irregularities that had taken place in the prison.

In view of complaints that several prisoners were using cellphones, a senior official had personally supervised a search of the prison recently. After some prisoners were found with cellphones, the officer suspected that Mr. Abbai had helped them procure the instruments.

Subsequently, the officer is said to have written to the Government recommending disciplinary action against Mr. Abbai, the sources said.

To avoid the humiliation of being suspended, Mr. Abbai could have committed suicide, the sources added.

The Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case of unnatural death.
