Building belonging to church attacked

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: In a pre dawn attack on Saturday, some 200 masked men demolished a building under construction belonging to the Catholic Church in Chavand area in South Rajasthan’s Udaipur district. The marauders who struck the town, predominantly an Adivasi area some 50 kms from Udaipur in Sarada tehsil, under the cover of darkness, also injured the watchmen.

“The building that was to serve as the residence of a priest is almost gone. It was nearing completion and only the roof was to be built,” Joseph Pathalil, the Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Udaipur, told The Hindu o n the phone. The attack took place at around 2 a.m.

The Bishop said he suspected the hand of the VHP. He alleged that a known VHP worker and up-sarpanch of the village had earlier led the attack on a priest looking after the Chavand centre

“We have been also receiving telephone calls in the past warning us against going ahead with the construction of the building.”

Sarada town was in the news a year ago following communal clashes, which led to the closure of the markets for several days. Chavand is associated with the the legendary Mewar ruler, Maharana Pratap.
