“No communication from university authorities”

Government had allotted Rs. 0ne crore as grant

MADURAI: The ‘Kamaraj project,’ announced by the State Government more than a year ago for setting up an Education Research Centre at Madurai Kamaraj University, is yet to take off.

While the Government has already provided Rs. one crore as grant, university authorities are yet to give shape to the project.

The Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, had announced the formation of a research centre at the university during the birth anniversary celebrations of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj held in Chennai in July 2006.

Faculty members in the Department of Education, MKU, said on Saturday that so far no communication had been received from university authorities on how the project would be implemented and what activities had been proposed.

“In the last year, only one step was taken. That was to form a committee of education experts from different varsities,” said a faculty member.

Those nominated to the committee are: R. Ananthasayanam from Department of Education Technology at Bharathiar University, P. Prema from Alagappa University, M. Sadanandan from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and K. Krishnan of Madurai Kamaraj University. The MKU Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, is the committee chairman.

Sources said that communication regarding the committee was sent on May 24 after which no further word was heard from the university.

Dr. Maruthamuthu said that steps would be taken to speed up the process and if necessary more funds would be allotted.

The project is aimed at promoting a holistic research in education and come out with tools to bridge the gaps.
