Aparna holds Shazuli

KOHZIKODE: R. Aparna held third seed Syed Shazuli to a draw in the opening round of the S.K. Pottekkat all-India FIDE rating open chess tournament here on Tuesday.

Important results (first round): P. Karthikeyan bt Sreeprakash; K. Arjun lost to R.R. Laxman; Syed Shazuli drew with R. Aparna; K. Mammen lost to Jayankur Chougule; Vinaya Kumar bt C.H. Meghana; K.V. Vighnesh lost to P. Sarava Krishnan ; O.T. Anil Kumar bt N. Madhuri; S. Athul Krishna lost to L. Chatterjee; C. Natarajan bt K. Abdul Gafoor. Children’s tournament

The Talco Trophy all-Kerala children’s chess tournament, organised by the Kadavanthra YMCA, will be held at the YMCA South Area Branch indoor stadium in Kochi on August 11 and 12. The tournament, basically an event for beginners, is open to school students below 15 years (born after 1-1-1992).

Players who secured top two positions in district or State-level competitions are not eligible.

Entries close on August 9 with the YMCA Branch secretary (Ph: 0484-2322446, 94474-10422).
