NEW DELHI: India raised its performance when it mattered and thrashed top seed Hungary 3.5-0.5 to open a 1.5-point lead after five rounds of the World youth (under-16) chess Olympiad in Singapore on Tuesday. The Tamil Nadu quartet of B. Adhiban, R. Ashwath, S. Nitin and P. Shyam Nikhil proved more than a match for the Hungarians who held higher ratings of every board. Adhiban held Tamas Fodor Jr. on the top board with black pieces. Even more creditable was the victory of Nitin who played black and overpowered the higher-rated Peter Prohaszka. Ashwath and Shyam played white on the second and fourth boards and came out stronger. However, earlier in the day, the Indians had fared disappointingly on way to a 2-2 result against joint leader and fourth seed Uzbekistan. The results (top 10 tables): Fifth round: Hungary (12.5) lost to India (15.5) 0.5-3.5 (Tamas Fodor Jr. drew with B. Adhiban; Guyla Pap lost to R. Ashwath; Peter Prohaszka lost to S. Nitin; Imre Balog lost to P. Shyam Nikhil); Uzbekistan (14) drew with Australia I (13.5) 2-2; Iran (12) lost to Philippines (13.5) 1.5-2.5; Turkey (14) bt Vietnam (11) 3.5-0.5; Switzerland (12.5) bt Singapore I (11) 2.5-1.5; South Africa (11) lost to Indonesia (12) 1.5-2.5; England (11) drew with Singapore II (10.5) 2-2; Iceland (10) lost to USA (11) 1.5-2.5; Japan (10) drew with Singapore III (10) 2-2; Australia II (9) drew with Singapore IV (10) 2-2. Fourth round: India drew with Uzbekistan 2-2 (Adhiban drew with Jamshid Mustafaev; Ashwath drew with Khursheed Mustafaev; Nitin lost to Evgeniy Pak; Shyam Nikhil bt Ulugbek Tiliyaev); Philippines lost to Hungary 1.5-2.5; Australia I bt Iran 3-1; Vietnam drew with Switzerland 2-2; Singapore I drew with England 2-2; Singapore II lost to Turkey 1-3; Indonesia bt Japan 3-1; Malaysia lost to Iceland 1.5-2.5; Singapore III drew with Australia III 2-2; Zambia lost to South Africa 0.5-3.5.
