India thrashes Poland

New Delhi: India started its campaign in style in the eight-nation under-21 men’s hockey tournament by thrashing Poland 9-1 at Mochengladbach, Germany, on Tuesday.

Diwakar Ram slammed in six goals as India ran through the hapless Poland defence at the Warsteiner Hockey Park.

Diwakar scored in the 10th, 15th, 22nd (both penalty corners), 28th, 50th and 62nd minutes, while J. Singh (seventh), P. Kumar (53rd) and Chandi (58th) completed the tally. Dszyjczk scored the lone goal for the losing side.

Belgium, England, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Spain and host Germany are the other teams in the competition.

India takes on Spain on Wednesday and Germany on August 10 in its remaining group matches. — PTI
