Easy for favourites

Chennai: Favourites had a smooth sailing in round one of the S.K. Narasihman Memorial FIDE-rating chess tournament here on Tuesday.

When play began, 156 players had entered the 11-round Swiss format competition.

Top-seeded Ram S. Krishnan of BSNL (Chennai) used his two bishops in a Slav defence game with white to defeat Aswin Kumar.

On the second board, GM-elect G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank played the Caro-Kann defence with black and won a pawn in the opening. C. Bala Subramanian went for a premature attack and paid the price by losing a rook for minor piece. Prakash threatened a mate in two when white gave up after 35 moves.

Notable first round winners included the Sri Lankan champion M.K.A. Russell.

There are seven players from Sri Lanka.
