Around 400 inmates and jail staff were screened by a team under ‘Varumun Kappom’ scheme
180 camps have been organised so far in Pudukottai, says Collector

PUDUKOTTAI: A special medical camp for the inmates lodged in the District Jail and the Borstal School here was conducted on Tuesday.
The District Collector, S. J. Chiru, inaugurated the camp.
It was conducted inside the prison under the State Government’s ‘Varumun Kappom’ scheme.
Around 400 inmates and jail staff were screened by a team of medical specialists, including an ophthalmologist, dermatologist, ortho and psychiatrist for over three hours.
Mr. Chiru said that the district administration had planned to conduct as many as 280 medical camps under the scheme in various places.
So far, 180 had been organised.
Those inmates who were referred for further treatment would be admitted to the convicts’ ward at the Government Hospital in the town.
The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Tiruchi Range, B.M. Ezra, the Superintendent of Police, Kapil Kumar Saratkar, the Joint Director (Medical and Rural Health Services in-charge), S. Rajaram, the District Jail Superintendent (in-charge), K. Jayabharathi, revenue officials and jail staff were present.
