Kolathur, Thiru-vi-ka Nagar (res), Virugampakkam and Velachery notified “There will be minor redistributions”
CHENNAI: Two city Assembly constituencies will be merged and four new ones carved out of the old ones according to a notification of the Delimitation Commission of India issued on Monday. The number of Assembly constituencies in the city will now go up to 16. The changes will come into force after Presidential assent is given to the notification. According to the notification, Chepauk and Triplicane constituencies will be merged to form ‘Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni’ constituency. The four new constituencies announced in the notification are Kolathur, Thiru-vi-ka Nagar (reserved), Virugampakkam and Velachery. In the list of proposed assembly constituencies, Park Town and Purasawalkam have been reconstituted. Thiru-vi-ka Nagar constituency will be carved out of portions previously under the Purasawalkam constituency. Virugampakkam is to be formed out Chennai Corporation divisions previously part of Villivakkam constituency. Velachery is likely to become the city’s smallest Assembly constituency, covering five Corporation wards – 151 to 155. There will also be other minor redistributions within the Assembly constituencies. Corporation ward 137, earlier a part of Saidapet constituency, has been transferred to T. Nagar.
