Shortage of manpower was a major problem for the NCC Shortening of training period agreed upon as a policy measure
CHENNAI: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is taking up career counselling in a major way, according to Commodore U.N. Chitnavis, NCC Deputy Director General for Tamil Nadu, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands Directorate. Commodore Chitnavis was on his annual inspection to assess the level of competence and efficiency of the Group Madras ‘B’. He told press persons that the students who joined the NCC were from an urban and semi-urban background. The NCC was looking forward to show them the avenues of study and employment open to them. “A reputed firm in New Delhi has trained the NCC staff on career counselling and the staff will train the students,” he said. Curtailing the Senior Division training from three years to two years was in the pipeline, he added. The Ministry of Defence had agreed to shortening of the training period as a policy measure. This will help more cadets to benefit from the training facilities of the NCC. Shortage of manpower was a major problem that prevented the NCC from increasing the number of student participation in schools and colleges, he said. The staff was barely adequate to meet the present student strength of 1.10 lakh, said Commodore Chitnavis. Though preference is given to NCC cadets in selection for various Government jobs in Police and Home Guards across the state, the Directorate has also approached the State Government in giving an increase in total percentage of marks for NCC students in colleges, he said. Plans are afoot to put up posters in schools and colleges, giving details on what the NCC has to offer and how the character building exercises will help in promoting the team spirit and boost the self confidence of the students, he said. Commodore Chitnavis witnessed various activities of the NCC Group Madras ‘B’, including water-borne activities by 1 (TN) Naval Unit NCC and Section Battle Drill, Section Formation Demonstrations by 1 (TN) CTC NCC.
