CHENNAI: For the third time in six months, the Chennai Corporation has invited bids for the construction of six railway bridges.
Construction of the bridges, which was offered as one package earlier, has been split into two this time to encourage more firms to bid. One tender package comprises the construction of Villivakkam rail under bridge (RuB), Monegary Choultry Road RuB and Kathivakkam rail overbridge (RoB).
The other tender package comprises Rangarajapuram RoB, Saidapet Jones Road RuB and a higher bridge to replace the Alandur causeway. Call for bids of the Korukkupet RuB, which was included last time, had to be deferred as the Railways has changed the alignment and heavy land acquisition is required, a senior official of the Corporation said. The quest to find a contractor for all seven projects together began in April this year.
Chennai-based Aban Construction qualified for the projects but quoted 41 per cent above the Corporation’s estimates.
The tender was cancelled and floated again. The package has been divided into two to encourage more firms to bid.
