THENI: Welfare aid worth Rs.39.59 lakh had been disbursed to ex-servicemen, their family members and war widows in the district so far. All efforts will be made to provide more facilities and extend all benefits to ex-servicemen, said Collector Har Sahay Meena.
He was delivering a special address at the general council meeting of the Federation of Ex-servicemen Welfare Associations held at Dharmapuri village near here on Monday.
With a record flag-day collection, Theni district stood first in the State last year. Target for this year was Rs.15 lakh, he said. “We hope that not only the target for this year would be exceeded but also set a new record in flag-day collection.”
To impart quality education to rural people, Kendriya Vidyalaya offering Central Board of Secondary Education would come up in Theni from next financial year. The district administration had identified 15 acres of land for this purpose at Alli Nagaram. Top priority would be given to wards of ex-service men. The district has 3,909 service personnel and 1,050 ex-servicemen. Dharampuri village was included in All Village Anna Renaissance Scheme this year to enhance amenities, he said.
The Federation secretary R. Ramaiah, in his special address, appealed to provide a Government building for CST canteen for ex-servicemen. Other speakers also demanded that a separate office of the Assistant Director for Ex-servicemen Welfare for the district to get better facilities.
They also sought to supply excess quantum of wheat to ex-servicemen family members as extra supply has been made to ex-servicemen at Perumalthevanpatti village in Virudhunagar district as a special case. Later, the Collector gave away prizes to artistes who performed cultural programme. Periakulam Sub-Collector J. Kumarakurubaran spoke.
