HEAVY damage: A submerged banana field at Tiruvalarcholai on Monday.

TIRUCHI: The brimming Cauvery has submerged a few hundreds of acres of banana plantation in Panayapuram, Kilikoodu and Uttamarseeli in the district. Along the embankment of the Coleroon, banana plantations were similarly affected at Sirumarudhur, V. Thuraiyur and Madakudi.

The inundation of the fields was caused by the release of 1.4 lakh cusecs of water from the Mettur Dam. The realisation at Mukkombu was 1.25 lakh cusecs, of which 70 per cent was diverted via the Coleroon. The rest was let into the Cauvery. The district administration has, however, not received any complaint of water inundation so far in patta land under irrigation, sources said.

Nevertheless, there is still a little hope that the banana crop could be salvaged partially since water is likely to recede. According to Public Works Department officials, the flow into the Mettur Dam at 7.00 p.m. on Monday was 58,839 cusecs and the outflow 72,127 cusecs.

According to the farmers, those who had not applied urea so far stand a chance to revive the crop.

But for Linga Nagar where water flowing backwards from Kudamurutti submerged a habitat on Sunday night, there was no inundation in residential areas. The habitat is at a couple of feet below the current level of the Cauvery and the only option for the residents is to wait for the water to recede. After timely flood warnings, the residents were, however, evacuated to safety beforehand.

Towards the evening, the level started receding in Linga Nagar, the Collector Ashish Vacchani said, after visiting the spot along with the Transport Minister K.N. Nehru and the Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman. The Minister instructed officials to ensure speedy removal of weeds along Kodikal and Kudamurtti channels and take precautionary measures to prevent entry of water into residential areas.

The Minister also took stock of the situation at Chintamani. He instructed Highways department officials to quicken the ongoing construction works of a bridge undertaken at a cost of Rs. 16 lakh across the Kathirikai Vaikal along Vayalur Road after inspecting the place.
