TIRUCHI: With the railways becoming an easy and soft striking target, timely alert on suspicious object or those moving in a suspicious manner on station premises would immensely help the security personnel in thwarting any possible sabotage attempt or criminal activity, the Divisional Security Commissioner, Railway Protection Force, Tiruchi, S.R. Gandhi, said on Tuesday.

He was addressing a group of licensed porters, authorised vendors and taxi drivers at a security related awareness programme organised exclusively for them by the Railway Protection Force here.

“Over one crore passengers travel by trains every day and it is virtually impractical for the security personnel to frisk and check each one of them. It is there that the porters, vendors and auto drivers could play a vital role by lending their valuable assistance in providing vital leads in case they come across to the security personnel in preventing crimes of any sort.”

Seeking the cooperation of the porters, vendors, auto and taxi drivers as they spend most of their time in railway stations, Mr. Gandhi said any untoward incident reported onboard trains or on railway tracks grabbed immediate national attention taking lot of time in crime detection, besides bringing normality in train operations.

“You too have a responsibility in maintaining a secure atmosphere on railway premises and in safe travel,” the Divisional Security Commissioner told the participants. Remaining vigilant was the best protective measure, he said adding that an awareness of security was being inculcated among the students in the north.

The RPF was concerned about stations security, passengers’ security besides protection of railway property. The objective of conducting the programme was to sensitise the porters, vendors and auto, taxi drivers to matters relating to safety and security, he said.
