CHENNAI: One of Chennai’s most popular women’s college, Stella Maris, is celebrating its diamond jubilee on Wednesday.

The institution, run by Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, was founded on August 15, 1947, coinciding with Independence Day.

The college is affiliated to the University of Madras.

It has grown from a one-storeyed building in Mylapore with 32 students to an institution of national repute. Now located on a sprawling campus on Cathedral Road, the college has 3,600 students. The institution offers as many as 13 undergraduate and 12 postgraduate programmes with five departments offering research programmes. The thrust of the educational programme is on liberal education in the humanities, commerce and sciences.

Some prominent alumni of the institution include dancers Alarmel Valli, Padma Subramaniam and retired IAS officer Jayanthi.
