Fire in locked house

Staff Reporter

It is suspected a spark fell on some inflammable articles

CHENNAI: A fire broke out in a residence on the ninth floor of a building on Venkatnarayana Road in T. Nagar on Monday night.

The call was received by the Fire and Rescue Services Department at 11.50 p.m. and subsequently, five fire tenders and a skylifter were rushed to the spot. Divisional Fire Officer V Vijaykumar, who supervised the operation, said the house was locked and the residents were away. The exact cause for the fire and the loss would be known only after police investigation. However, it is suspected that the accident occurred owing to a spark falling on some inflammable articles in the house. The fire was put out in about 90 minutes and the fire-fighters ensured that it did not spread to other floors, he added.

Another fire

In another case of fire reported from a match manufacturing unit in Tiruvottiyur on Tuesday afternoon, two workers were injured. According to fire officers, the fire was spotted first in a waste dump on the premises. The injured were identified as Jagannathan (50) of Tiruvottiyur and Manickam (45) of Manali. They were taken to a private nursing home and later shifted to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

The police have registered a case and are investigating.
