CHENNAI: A 23-year-old youth was arrested on charges of assaulting two policemen when they stopped him during a routine vehicle check.
Police said R. Gopi of Tiruvottiyur, who was riding a two-wheeler, was stopped near Srinivasa Avenue-Kamarajar Salai junction in Abhiramapuram police station limits. He allegedly attempted to attack the police personnel with a knife. But, he was overpowered and arrested.
Investigations revealed that Gopi had allegedly indulged in a few crimes reported in different parts of the city in the last one month.
According to his confession, he snatched a five-sovereign chain from a woman near Chamiers Road and fled from the spot on July 10.
On July 18, he diverted the attention of a person near a private bank on Cenotaph Road and took away Rs. 74,000 in cash.
Again, on August 3, Gopi and his accomplice Karuna escaped with a mobile phone and Rs 15,000 in cash kept inside a two-wheeler belonging to a woman who parked it near the Tiruvanmiyur beach.
