CHENNAI: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 37 tonnes of red sanders logs from three containers meant for export, at the Chennai Port on Monday.
A release from the DRI said that they examined three containers, of which two were declared as granite blocks and the third one as natural slate stones.
The granite blocks were meant for export to China and the slate stones for export to Malaysia.
1,512 logs
The first two containers were found to be packed with 940 logs of red sanders, weighing 21 tonnes and the third container had 572 logs, weighing 16 tonnes.
The red sanders were prohibited for export as per Foreign Trade Policy and the logs were seized under the Customs Act of 1962. The seized red sanders were valued at Rs.1.5 crore.
