Helmet rule relaxation

CHENNAI: Women and male children under 12 years have been exempted from compulsory wearing of helmets as pillion riders following an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Rules.

As per the amendment, a new rule, ‘417-A exceptions in wearing protective headgear (helmet),’ which has been inserted, says provisions of Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act providing for compulsory wearing of helmet shall not apply to 1) persons who belong to Meivazhi Sabha or Meivazhi Salai who wear turban while riding a motorcycle and 2) woman or child riding on motorcycle as pillion riders.

According to the explanation in the government gazette extraordinary, ‘woman’ meant a female human being of any age and ‘child’ a male human being aged under 12 years. — Special Correspondent
