Barnala, Karunanidhi greet people

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Tuesday greeted people on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Independence.

In his message, he said “Our thoughts turn in deep gratitude today to the architects of our freedom movement. It is our bounden duty to recall with respect and reverence the sacrifices made by our forefathers for the liberation of our motherland.”

He urged people to resolve to promote tolerance, unity, peace and harmony and proceed towards the goal of making India a developed nation.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in his Independence Day message urged people to remain united and work hard for development of society.

He said the Government had initiated programmes such as rice at Rs 2 per kg, free television sets for the poor, egg thrice a week under the nutritious noon meal scheme, LPG connection with stove and financial assistance to pregnant women for six months.

These had benefited the poor. All people should work together to improve the life of the poor.

CPI (M) State Secretary N.Varadarajan said people should take a vow to hold aloft a foreign policy that would protect the country’s sovereignty, end unemployment and untouchability and ensure there was a reasonable price for farm inputs and remunerative price for their produce to benefit poverty-stricken farmers.

MGR Kazhagam president R.M.Veerappan, said after Independence, the country had progressed on several fronts.

Actor R. Sarath Kumar said it should be the people’s endeavour to eradicate terrorism, communal and caste hatred, political injustice, poverty and corruption, which remained stumbling blocks to country’s progress.

The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, said according to the National Sample Survey Organisation, about 30 crore people lived below the poverty line. Justice has to be done to them by elevating their social status.
