Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko appeared before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), Egmore, on Tuesday, in connection with a defamation complaint against him. CMM S. Rajagopalan posted the case to September 7 for trial.

In his complaint filed under section 200 Cr.P.C. for offence under sections 500 and 501 IPC, DMK treasurer Arcot N. Veerasamy said Mr. Vaiko had made a statement against the DMK and its leader, M. Karunanidhi, which was “not only malicious but reckless, irresponsible and unscrupulous.” The complaint cited a news item published in The New Indian Express on December 25, 2006, which carried the MDMK leader’s statement.

Besides Mr. Vaiko, the printer and publisher, K. Ranganathan and Editor (Tamil Nadu), Kamlendra Kanwar of the daily were cited as accused in the complaint.
