CHENNAI: Trauma surgeon and founder of Devaki Hospitals K. Chockalingam (63) died on Wednesday, following a brief illness. Dr. Chockalingam was battling renal failure for the past few months. He died at the Kottivakkam residence of his brother S.K.R. Viswanathan. He is survived by daughters Deepa and Preetha. He was the last Sheriff of erstwhile Madras and the family physician of the former Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa. He was the one who declared the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, dead after the suicide bomber attack in 1991. He is credited with initiating traumatology care in the private sector hospitals and reversing the reluctance to admit accident cases. The cremation will take place at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Corporation’s crematorium in Besant Nagar.
