Good response to ‘Grama Sandarshana’

Staff Correspondent

Madikeri MLA receives petitions from people of many villages in Sampaje

SAMPAJE (Kodagu-Dakshina Kannada border): Basic amenities such as sites and houses, demand for regularisation of encroached forestland and ‘hakku patra’, roads and electricity, dominated the “Grama Seve-Grama Sandarshana” programme of the Department of Information here on Monday.

Madikeri MLA K.G. Bopaiah received petitions from the people, most of them from poor families, after inaugurating the programme. The Department of Information would gather all petitions from the villagers and forward them to the respective departments for action. The action taken would be communicated to the applicants later, District Information Officer Vinodchandra said.

B.A. Ganapathi of Sampaje-Kallala village urged the authorities concerned to provide good road links to Sampaje, Peraje and Chembu villages.

Removal of trees affecting traffic on Sampaje road, providing quality electricity supply and telephone communication, especially during monsoon and regularisation of encroached forestland were the other demands. The Government should tackle “yellow disease” in areca and provide relief to growers, he added.

Another citizen complained that applications submitted to the “Akrama-Sakrama Samiti” for regularisation had been taken up. Nagesh Kundalpadi, member of the Madikeri Taluk Panchayat, wanted agriculture extension officers posted in every gram panchayat in Madikeri taluk to take steps to provide relief to the affected farmers.

A participant suggested to Mr. Bopaiah to evolve steps to earmark land for graveyards in each gram panchayat. President of the Madikeri Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee Upadhyaya urged Mr. Bopaiah to convene village forest committee meetings in villages to look into the issue of giving “hakku patras” to the beneficiaries. He was for setting up a primary health centre at Chembu village.

Balachandra Kalagi, president of the Sampaje Gram Panchayat, wanted power connections to Sampaje SC and ST Colony and a high school for the area. He appealed to Mr. Bopaiah to take steps to remove clear encroachment on the Sampaje Gram Panchayat property and provide adequate relief for loss of areca crop. Meena Kumari, member of the Madikeri Taluk Panchayat, spoke.

Madikeri Tahsildar Yashoda and Assistant Executive Engineer of CHESCOM Suresh gave their plans of action in response to some queries.

Mr. Bopaiah said the practice of obtaining “no objection” certificate from the Forest Department after the Revenue Department had issued “hakku patra” should be stopped. The Forest Department was given Class C & D lands (partially degraded forests) in the early 90s by the Revenue Department under the “Land Bank” scheme, which meant any extent of the land could be taken back for public purposes.

Sampaje village had been identified under the Suvarna Grama Yojna. A sum of Rs. 1 crore would be spent on the development of the village. Of the amount, Rs. 15 lakh had been released, Mr. Bopaiah said.

He had requested the State Government to consider farmers who owned below five acres of land as “small farmers” to be able to derive various benefits.

The Sampaje-Buntwal road was being widened, which would aid economic prosperity of the region, he said. He instructed the officials of various departments to redress the grievances of the people.
