Indian Bank lifts TNEB Trophy

Dindigul: Indian Bank (Chennai) lifted the TNEB Trophy defeating Madras Sporting Union FC (Chennai) 1-0 in the final of the annual State-level invitation football tournament here on Saturday.

Indian Bank could have won by a bigger margin had the forwards not missed a few chances. IB could have taken the lead in the fifth minute but Santha Kumar shot straight into goalkeeper Billa’s hands off a cross from Sumanraj.

Sporting also missed a chance in the 43rd minute when Vimalraj was well set to score with goalkeeper Felix out of position but Satheesh spoiled the chance. Sporting had to play only with only with 10 men from the 47th minute as Vimalraj was given a red card by referee Arockiaraj for dangerous play.

The only goal came in the 68th minute when Ramesh placed the ball into a far corner of the net receiving a forward pass from Karthikeyan from the top of the box.

G.V. Ramasamy, chief engineer, TNEB, Madurai, presided and gave away the prizes.

Two wins for SIT

Sathyabama University (Chennai) and Sethu Institute of Technology recorded two wins each in the four-team group ‘A’ quarterfinal league at the annual Kamarajar memorial trophy state-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament at Nagamalai on Saturday.

The results (league): Group ‘A’: Sathyabama University bt Kalasalingam 25-8, 25-20, 25-19; Sathyabama bt Gandhigram Rural University 25-5, 25-23, 25-19; SIT bt GRU 25-16, 25-15, 25-18; SIT bt Kalasalingam 25-19, 25-16, 25-2 3.

Group ‘B’: SRM University bt Jain College 25-13, 25-14, 25-9; SRM bt Jamal Mohammed 25-13, 25-15, 25-18; Jamal Mohamed bt ANJC (Sivakasi) 25-13, 25-20, 25-16; Jain bt ANJC 25-16, 30-32, 25-18, 21-25, 15-13.
NLC advances

NLC Boys Higher Secondary School (Neyveli) beat host Nadar Saraswathi HSS 57-29 to enter the quarterfinals of the Murugesan memorial trophy state-level inter-school basketball tournament at Theni on Saturday.

Prabakaran shines

A hat-trick by Prabakaran helped host Sethu Institute of Technology defeat RVS College of Engineering 5-0 in the Anna University zone IX inter-engineering college football tournament at Kariapatti on Saturday. Sankar and Simon scored the other two goals.

Other results: Vikram 2 bt KLN 1; Ammal 2 bt St. Michael 1 (via tie-break).
Devaraj sizzles

Four goals in a row by Devaraj helped Raju’s College (Rajapalayam) defeat VHNSN College (Virudhunagar) 5-2 and win the title in the Madurai Kamarajar University ‘D’ zone inter-collegiate hockey tournament at Sivakasi on Saturday.

Rajalingam scored the other goal for Raju’s College. Challadurai and Suresh scored for VHNSN.
St. Joseph’s wins title

St. Joseph’s College of Engineering defeated Sethu Institute of Technology 63-52 to win the title at the Anna University inter-zonal basketball tournament in Pudukottai.

Anees Kowsar of Chennai defeated Divyadevi Mahesh of Salem 21-18, 21-11 and booked a place in the women’s final of the state senior badminton championship, jointly conducted by the Pudukottai District Badminton Association and JJ College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai on Saturday.

In the other semifinal, Amrin Mubarak of Chennai rallied to beat Hamsica of Coimbatore 22-20, 13-21, 21-10.

Air Force Station (Thanjavur) defeated Kings College of Engineering by 11 runs and entered the quarterfinals of the Indian Air Force Platinum Jubilee cricket tournament in Thanjavur on Saturday.

The results (pre-quarterfinals): Air Force Station (Thanjavur) 152 in 34.4 overs (Srivatsav 30) bt Kings College of Engineering 141 in 29 overs (Ilayaraja 48, Aggara four for 21).
Priyadarshini triumphs

S. Priyadarshini of Seethalakshmi Ramasamy College defeated T. Jeyasri of Savitri Vidyasala Hindu Girls’ HSS to win the women’s title in the district-ranking table tennis tournament in Tiruchi on Saturday.
