Workers lay siege to Collectorate

Collector’s intervention sought

Withdrawal of orders demanded

Kakinada: A large number of quarry and lorry workers from Yelesweram and neighbouring villages under the aegis of the united action committee of workers besieged the Collectorate here on Monday protesting against the Government decision to close down 36 quarries.

They also staged a demonstration and raising slogans against the Government for its order for closure of quarries.

The decision would deprive many workers of their job, they lamented.

Contention

The contended the quarries were located beyond 500 metres from the Yeleru Reservoir project as such there was no danger to the project as presumed.

They were prepared to give an undertaking to the Government that under any circumstances they would not carry out quarrying operations within 500 metres of the project.

Memo submitted

Chandaka Satyanarayana, president of the committee, led the agitation.

Later, a delegation consisting of quarry and motor workers unions’ leaders -- Kuppala Nagabhushanam, Akula Gangaraju, Mamidi Srinivasulu, Katta Satyanarayana and Kakara Venkatrao -- called on the District Collector and submitted a memorandum to him seeking his intervention to solve the problem immediately.

They wanted immediate withdrawal of the orders on closure of the quarries.
