Panel entrusted with the task of ascertaining whether Mudigonda police firing was justified
MUDIGONDA: Some technical objections raised on the first day of the first sitting of the Justice I Panduranga Rao Commission of enquiry resulted in adjournment of the examination of eye witnesses to Tuesday. There was no mention of venue of the sitting of the Commission in the summons served to seven of the eye witnesses supposed to be examined in the day. “It was an office mistake,” said the retired High Court Judge. Revised summons would be served to all of them who could not appear before the Commission, he said. The counsel who appeared on behalf of the CPI(M) district committee had pointed out that the witnesses were referred to as the witnesses for the State. But they should have been termed as the witnesses for the Commission. The Commission had also agreed to rectify this to facilitate the examination of the witnesses as scheduled from Tuesday. Affidavit rejected
The Commission however rejected an affidavit sought to be filed on behalf of the CPI(M) district committee. It wanted the affidavit to be filed on behalf of the respective individual witnesses. “We are not concerned about the political parties,” he said. If the affidavit is allowed, it would amount to extending of inquiry to many other parties and caste organisations as well, he said. On the terms of reference of the enquiry he said the Commission was entrusted with the task of ascertaining whether the police firing was justified or not. The inquiry is open for all. If someone come forward to depose before the Commission, his statement would be recorded by the commission. Two senior advocates - Kolli Satyanarayana and K. Uttam Kumar said that the affidavit was sought to be filed on behalf of the CPI(M) district committee as call for the State bandh was given by the party and the men who were killed in the police firing were its party workers.
