KADAPA: UPA chairperson and AICC president Sonia Gandhi’s tour of the State will help Andhra Pradesh secure grant of more Central funds for developmental schemes, PCC official spokesman N. Thulasi Reddy said on Monday. Criticising TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s propriety in deploring Ms. Gandhi’s tour of the State, Mr. Thulasi Reddy accused Mr. Naidu of becoming jittery at the overwhelming public response of peoplenotwithstanding the inclement weather. Central grants
Out of farmers’ package of Rs. 16,979 crores for the country, Andhra Pradesh was granted Rs. 9,659 crore, which worked out to 56.81 per cent of the total outlay. Among other Central grants, the State was allotted Rs. 1,878 crore under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission and Rs. 1,250 crore under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme, he said. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy secured 89 clearances for irrigation projects in the State in the last three years, as against 17 clearances secured by Mr. Chandrababu Naidu in his nine-year rule, he said. The State annual plan tripled to Rs. 30,500 crore this year as against Rs. 10,759 crore in 2003-04 and achieved the highest growth rate, the PCC leader said. More Central grants were required for Andhra Pradesh, which undertook ‘Jalayagnam, Gruhayagnam and Bhooyagnam’ and Ms. Gandhi could use her good offices for liberal grants to the State. Refuting charges that Government funds were spent for the UPA chairperson’s visit, he said the APCC paid Rs. 60 lakh for APSRTC buses used during her visit. Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and the Chief Minister visited the Hyderabad blast sites and ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh was already paid and hence Ms. Gandhi did not visit the places, he added.
