HYDERABAD: A rash of road accidents across the State left at least 24 persons dead — in Kurnool and Medak (8 each), Khammam (6) and Adilabad (2) districts — between Sunday night and Monday morning. In a major and gory road accident, eight persons, including three children were killed when a lorry laden with glass scrap overturned and fell into a roadside ditch at Ulindakonda, 25 km from Kurnool town. Nearly 15 passengers who boarded the truck at Dhone were seated on top of the load. Eight persons were buried alive under the glass scrap, while four escaped with minor injuries as they were thrown aside even as the truck was overturning. All the 15 belonged to “Budaga Jangam” community, who eke out a living by hawking plastic pitchers in villages. Eight more including two women perished and four grievously injured in another ghastly road accident on National Highway 7 in Toopran mandal of Medak district. Thirteen members of two families belonging to Jambagh area of Hyderabad who were on their way to Basara temple were travelling in the ill-fated Matador van when it was hit by a speeding truck coming in the opposite direction. Goli Sudarshan , his son Goli Ramulu , Madhusudhan , his wife Nirmala and van driver Mujeeb Ali Khan died on the spot. Madhusudhan’s mother Yadamma, son-in-law Anjaneyulu and son Srinivas died in Gajwel and Gandhi Hospital here respectively. Police said the families of Madhusudhan and Sudarshan were on their way to Basara to perform Aksharabhyasam of Vaishnavi, the former’s grandchild, who has been admitted to Gandhi hospital with injures. In Khammam district, six persons perished in an accident in Sathupalli sub division on Sunday night. The accident occurred as a lorry carrying a cement load on its way from Jaggaiahpet to Visakhapatnam overturned after hitting a roadside electrical pole. All of them - Banothu Shankar, Banothu Machu, G.Gopaiah, Gopya Ramesh, Gopya Naveen, and Dharnaopogui Veeranna, were trapped under cement bags. In two separate accidents in Adilabad town, on Monday, Vetti Jangu, 25, was hit by an oncoming bus while Mamidala Sunil Kumar, a second year Intermediate student, was knocked down by a lorry. A Sub-Inspector of Police was run over by a vehicle in the State capital.
