BANGALORE: It was a heartening performance by the Indian squad which returned from the Asian Age Group aquatics championship held at Jakarta last week, with an all time high tally of seven gold, 11 silvers and six bronzes in swimming, one silver and two bronzes in diving and one bronze in waterpolo for women . The Chief National coach S. Pradeep Kumar said that the meet was all the more memorable as the swimmers came up with a good number of best Indian performances. He commended Delhi’s Richa Misra and Sandeep Sejwal for consistent display in the open section. Richa bagged the 400m individual medley with an Indian best of 5:01.08 thus bettering her own National record of 5:05.85 and she won the 200 m butterfly gold in 2:18.66 erasing her own previous best of 2:19.58. Richa also clocked 1:04.45 in 100m butterfly for a personal best. Sandeep Sejwal’s gold winning time of 1:04.36 in 100 m breaststroke was also a National best and he also bettered the Asian age Group mark of 1:04.40. Sejwal also recorded a Indian best of 29.36 in 50m breaststroke. The Bangalore teenager Aaron D’Souza gold winning effort of 8:33.37s in Group I boys was also a national best. Shikha Tandon bagged gold in 50m backstroke, clocking 31.44s while Lekha Thomas won gold in the 50m butterfly (29.66s). J. Agneshwar struck gold in 50m breast stroke in the Group I boys section. Rehan Poncha, who won silver in the 200m butterfly, also recorded the best Indian time in the 200m individual medley (2:09.06) and 400m individual medley (4:34.64) in the open section. “The schedule was very taxing and often we started the day at 6 a.m. with heats and finished our final races around 10 or 10-30 p.m.,” he said. Karnataka State Police pounded a hapless Royals FC 5-0 in the Super League football championship at the BDFA Stadium here on Monday. Archan’s rapid strike in the 10th and 35th minutes respectively put KSP in command. The Police squad kept its whip-hand with an aggressive display in the second session as well and it resulted in goals at regular intervals. Karthikeyan found the mark in 47th minute while Karthik and Senthil Kumar struck in 63rd and 83rd minutes respectively. MEG forfeited its match against SAI following a scuffle in a super division hockey league match at the KSHA Stadium here on Monday evening. MEG was leading 3-1 in the second-half when SAI scored two goals in succession to draw level. Vineeth Michael scored SAI’s third goal but MEG’s Samson Fernandez objected to the goal, citing that it was scooped up and had a scuffle with the umpire Hardeep Singh. Later the MEG players trooped out and never returned to the ground. Later the tournament’s technical committee met and awarded the match to SAI besides issuing a show-cause notice to Samson. Combined City defeated Tumkur Zone by 57 runs in a KSCA inter-zonal under-19 tournament match that concluded here on Sunday. Trailing by 235 runs, Tumkur Zone struggled in its second innings against K. Goutham, who bagged five wickets. The scores: Combined City 159 in 51.4 overs and 158 for nine decl. in 40.1 overs (R. Dhiman 44, Sanjoth four for 54) bt Tumkur Zone 82 in 41 overs and 178 in 45.4 overs (Abhilash 87, Anup Singh 45, K. Goutham five for 43). Bangalore Zone 272 in 82.2 overs and 205 for three in 37 overs (Suraj Sampath 103 n.o., Sanjay Kumar 52) drew with Raichur Zone 196 in 69.3 overs (Murali Krishna 45). Mangalore Zone 315 for nine in 90 overs drew with President’s XI 190 for eight in 78 overs (G.S. Chiranjeevi 43, A.G. Mayank 40). Shimoga Zone 119 in 35.3 overs and 115 for eight in 39 overs (Md. Salauddin five for 34) drew with Mysore Zone 219 in 69 overs (S.L. Ashish four for 27).
