SI of Malakpet police station, motorcyclist chase lorry and overtake it at A1 circle Driver does not relent and speeds away, knocking down Sub-Inspector
HYDERABAD: A police officer who chased and tried to stop a speeding lorry was fatally run over at Nampally in the early hours of Monday. The police officer, E. Madhava Reddy, of Malakpet police stat ion, died in a private hospital later in the day. Police subsequently managed to intercept the lorry and took the driver into custody. On night duty
A murder case has been registered against him. Police said Madhava Reddy who was on night duty was checking vehicles at Gaddiannaram crossroads around 1 a.m. on Monday when a police officer of Cyberabad Commissionerate, Ramchander Rao, informed him about a lorry which sped away and almost hit his vehicle in Saroornagar. Truck chased
Sub Inspector Reddy, who was present along with some other policemen, signalled the lorry to stop and was taking out the challan book after asking the driver to get off the vehicle, when the driver sped away. “Since the lorry was not loaded and the road was obstruction free, the driver could manage to get away easily,” the police said. Taken aback, the SI requested a motorcyclist, Nithin, of Moosarambagh, and jumped on the pillion. The motorcyclist and the SI chased the lorry while other policemen followed them in a police vehicle. The motorcyclist overtook the speeding lorry at A1 circle, got down and signalled the driver to stop. However, despite seeing the uniformed police officer, the driver did not relent and tried to speed away again, knocking down the police officer. Succumbs to injuries
While some policemen following the SI rushed him to a nearby private hospital, others launched a chase and managed to stop the vehicle after a hot chase. After battling for life for some time, the SI succumbed to his injuries. Mr. Reddy joined the Police Department as a constable some 20 years ago and was promoted as Sub-Inspector. He worked in the Hyderabad Detective Department before being transferred to Malakpet police station a couple of months ago. The soft-spoken SI achieved a breakthrough in several cheating cases with his meticulous investigation, his colleagues recalled.
