Rs. 500 crore sought for toddy tappers’ welfare

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: State BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya has demanded allocation of Rs.500 crore for the welfare of toddy tappers and accused the Government of adopting a ‘vindictive’ attitude towards them.

Addressing a dharna of party workers organised in front of the Excise and Prohibition Commissioner’s office here on Monday, he said G.O. 767 was against the interests of toddy-tappers and adversely affected them. The Government had not paid ex-gratia to the families of 18 toddy tappers who died in the state.

Mr. Dattatreya charged the Government with ‘succumbing to pressures’ of the liquor lobby and encouraging ‘belt’ shops while imposing restrictions on toddy shops. He urged all parties to support the demand for withdrawal of the G.O. Party general secretary K. Laxman and Floor leader in the Assembly G. Kishan Reddy accused the Government of suppressing the backward classes.
