Computer training centre a big hit

S. Rajendran

BANGALORE: This computer training centre of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), located at Yeshwantapur, is one with a difference. It is free, the instructors are experienced, and the quality of the training is never compromised. And so it is little wonder that nearly 400 trainees throng the centre from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Yeshwantapur centre stands out among the other computer centres started by the BBMP in each of the 12 legislative assembly constituencies. Much like engineering colleges, trainees here begin to get job offers almost immediately after completing training. The BBMP centre provides basic training in computers and accounting, power point, DTP, MS word, Excel, internet and multimedia. Malleswaram MLA, M.R. Seetharam who was instrumental in the success of the centre, bears the cost of salaries of the instructors and maintenance.

Interestingly, nearly 75 per cent of the trainees here are homemakers and young girls, keen to acquire computer expertise and improve their career prospects. Varalakshmi (23), wife of an automobile mechanic is one such trainee, who passed out of the centre recently. “I am confident now of getting a decent job as a computer assistant, hopefully either in Yeshwanthpur or Malleswaram as they are close to my house,” she says. Bhavani (28) and Seetha (38), a young widow with two children, also say they are hopeful of a good job.

Ravi (24) who has been working as a typist in a private establishment for a salary of Rs. 2,000 per month, says he has already been promoted along with a salary hike of Rs. 1,000.
