Bangalore: There will be surprise visits to all government and private sector offices, including police stations, prisons, hotels, industries, multinational banks and IT firms, across the State from wherever human rights violations are reported, chairman of the State Human Rights Commission S.R. Nayak has said. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. S.R. Nayak said such visits had become necessary in the light of the increasing number of human rights violation cases of various kinds. The commission as an advisory body would spare no working place where human decency and dignity were taken for granted or injured. It would only recommend to the authorities concerned to take action against the offenders. But it would seek legal course on its own if the authorities concerned preferred to overlook its recommendations, he added. Despite want of infrastructure such as proper accommodation, adequate staff, office equipment and furniture, the commission had been examining over 75 complaints it had received hitherto. Referring to a case of illegal detention, Mr. Nayak said that following a complaint by Suresh, an advocate from Bangalore, the commission visited the Ulsoor police station on Thursday and found that the police had kept Maruthi under illegal confinement at the station since September 4. ‘No illegal detention’
Reacting to the charge of Mr. Nayak, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) B.K. Singh said it was not a case of illegal detention. Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Singh said Maruti was brought to the police station by the complainant on charges of cheating. “Maruti was brought yesterday. He will be produced before the jurisdictional magistrate court within 24 h ours. There is no case against the police inspector.”
