Hassan airport likely to create more than 5,000 jobs by 2015

BANGALORE: Besides stimulating socio-economic growth in the Malnad region, the proposed airport at Hassan will help create over 5,000 jobs in various sectors and generate over $60 million in foreign exchange by 2015.

The first phase of work would be completed in 24 months and the airport would commence commercial operations from April 2009. The trial run of aircraft would commence by 2008 end, said S. Ravi Narayanan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Jupiter Aviation, the promoter for the project, to presspersons on Thursday.

Jupiter Aviation, which is building the airport on 960 acres, will invest Rs. 600 crore in the first phase.

Aviation officials, who made a presentation to the officials of the Public Works Department, said the ‘world-class, all weather all aircraft’ airport would generate over Rs. 100 crore revenue to the State and attract investment of over Rs. 3,000 crore by 2015. It will make Hassan a major cargo handling destination through an inland container depot. It will also establish a training centre for pilots, Mr. Narayanan said.

“The Hassan airport draws inspiration from four successful airports across the globe–Memphis, U.S.; Toulouse, France; Bristol, U.K.; and Paya Lebar, Singapore,” the company said, adding that the airport’s carrying capacity would be two million passengers by 2015.

On the employment front, the airport will facilitate Rs. 2,500 crore investment in the ancillary activities and create 6,000 jobs. About 1,200 jobs would be created in the cargo sector alone, Mr. Narayanan said.

Sudhir Krishna, principal secretary, PWD, told the Hassan Urban Development Authority officials to prepare a master plan to avoid haphazard development near the airport. He told the Hassan Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM) officials to relocate the high tension wires by November end.

The Forest Department would be instructed to cut trees located on the plot, Mr. Krishna said.

The airport would be linked by road and rail. A ring road would be laid to facilitate smooth traffic between Hassan City and the airport. The passenger trains would operate on the Mangalore-Hassan route soon. The Bangalore-Mangalore national highway (NH-48) would be converted into four lanes, Mr. Krishna said.
