Vigilance Department has conducted inquiry against then Excise Commissioner BHUBANESWAR: Vigilance Department of Orissa Police has filed a corruption case against a senior IAS officer for his alleged involvement in waiving off of excise duty favouring a private company. An inquiry taken up by vigilance department revealed that Vijay Arora, then Excise Commissioner, had allegedly allowed pecuniary advantage to Shakti Sugar Private Limited (SSPL) of Dhenkanal by waiving out the penalty imposed on the company to the tune of Rs. 32.63 lakhs. The penalty was imposed for shortage of 22,614 litre bulk of rectified spirits detected by excise officials during a surprise check on December 31, 2002, a vigilance department release said here on Friday. During his tenure, Mr. Arora had issued no objection certificates for the export of 97 tank of rectified spirit from SSPL to McDowel company’s unit in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. During that time the State was experiencing deficit of rectified spirit and importing rectified spirit from other states at higher rate. "By way of allowing such huge export, he caused a revenue loss of Rs 25 lakhs to the State exchequer with equivalent pecuniary gain to SSPL," the department said. The vigilance department also registered a case against SSPL.
