Students stage road blockade

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Khallikote town in Ganjam district remained cut off from outside world for over three hours on Monday afternoon due to road blockade by students of the Khallikote Art and Craft College.

The students of the college burnt tyres to block the entry point to Khallikote at Tinichhak square.

They were demanding immediate suspension of the in-charge principal and another lecturer of the college and provision basic amenities.

Sub-collector Ajit Mishra had to rush to Khallikote to hold discussions with the agitating students. A delegation of five student representatives -- Subhasis patnaik, Chiranjiv Panda, Amaresh Jena, Sambhu Nayak and Narayan Swain -- held discussions with the administrative officials. They lifted the road blockade after police and administrative officials promised to initiate investigation into allegations made by the students and efforts to improve amenities at the art college.

The students were alleging that the in-charge principal, P.K. Das, and a lecturer of the institution, Laxmikant Mohanty, were involved in misappropriation of funds.
