HYDERABAD: Tirupati, Warangal, Guntur and Rajahmundry will be converted into urban police districts shortly for the purpose of maintaining law and order. A proposal to this effect is expected to receive formal approval of the Cabinet at its meeting on October 1. Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, Home Minister K. Jana Reddy and DGP M. A. Basith said a long-pending demand by leaders and people of these cities, indeed, was to create police commissionerates for them. As creation of commissionerates was not possible at this stage due to Cr P C Act specifying a minimum population of 10 lakh for any city seeking such a facility, urban police district status was being accorded to them. However, the population of these cities, especially Tirupati, was growing by leaps and bounds. Today, Tirupati accounted for a population of 7 to 8 lakh. Once made urban police districts, these cities would have a police force of over 3000 each, headed by an SP. The Minister said Tirupati, Warangal, Rajahmundry and Guntur were growing phenomenally, leading to other problems like crime. The system would be better equipped to tackle crime, traffic and other problems once they were made urban police districts.
