High point of the evening was performance of Abhaswaram Ramji’s Children Orchestra
Moment of honour: Chairman of Velammal Group of Institutions M.V. Muthuramalingam presenting an award instituted by Ma Foi Foundation for all round performance to M. Priyadharshini in Chennai on Wednesday. Carborundum Universal chairman M.M. Murugappan (right) and managing trustee of the Foundation Hemalatha Rajan are in the picture. CHENNAI: An accomplished diver, a national-level chess player who is visually and hearing impaired, an inventor of devices to help the physically challenged, and an outstanding performer of folk arts were some of the students who received the young achiever’s award at the Ma Foi Foundation awards ceremony here on Wednesday. Six children received the academic excellence award for outstanding performance in their Standard X board exams. The Ma Foi Foundation is the corporate social responsibility wing of research and consultancy company Ma Foi Management Consultants. Managing trustee of the foundation Hemalatha Rajan said that the foundation worked towards empowering children and women and making youth more employable. Disha is one of the foundation’s initiatives to give poor children holistic education. Around 1,200 children in Chennai and Sivakasi were given financial support, career guidance and mentoring under the scheme, she said. The foundation also assisted women in forming SHGs, ran a school for underprivileged children, and had set up training institutes for youth, Ms. Rajan said. The Corporation Girl’s HSS, Perambur, won the overall championship trophy at the Disha Thirukkural Thiruvizha interschool competition. The high point of the evening was the performance of Abhaswaram Ramji’s Children Orchestra, whose rendering of popular songs from ‘Sivaji’ and ‘Vallavan’ had the children cheering along. The audience also hugely enjoyed a ventriloquist’s performance – a dialogue between a man and a monkey. The evening ended with a drama performed by the Disha students with ‘helping others in need’ as the theme. M.M. Murugappan, chairman, Carborundum Universal; and M.V. Muthuramalingam, chairman, Velammal Group of Institutions, were the chief guests for the evening.
