“About four crore people in the country suffer heart attacks every year”
CHENNAI: Change of unhealthy lifestyle is essential to control and prevent heart diseases, cardiologist and former president of Cardiological Society of India V. Chockalingam said here on Wednesday.
Speaking to presspersons, he said the Chennai chapter of the Society planned to conduct cardiac camps in the city on World Heart Day on Sunday.
Dr. Chockalingam said that according to a recent survey of the Cardiological Society of India, about four crore people in the country suffered heart attacks every year.
Hypertension, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels were are other risk factors.
In Chennai, the risk group suffering from blood pressure and coronary heart diseases had increased to 12 per cent from 3 per cent of the population in the last 15 years.
Several people in the age group of 25-35 years now face the risk of being affected by lifestyle disorders and heart diseases due to stress, he said.
Regular physical activity, dietary changes and a relaxed mind were the key factors for a healthy heart, Dr. Chockalingam noted.
On obesity among children, he said if youngsters were guided with proper food habits and exercise at an early age, lifestyle disorders could be avoided when they grew up. He recommended intake of more vegetables, including onion and garlic and use of sunflower oil and rice bran oil for a healthy lifestyle.
