Chennai: The Sethusamudhram Ship Canal Project was scientifically unviable and would destroy the livelihood of coastal fishing community, scientists at a press conference organised by The Movement Against Sethusamudhram Ship Canal Project, said here on Friday.
A proper geo-evaluation report had not been done for the project, especially as the Palk Bay-Gulf of Mannar area was fragile with respect to tectonic movements, K. Gopalakrishnan, retired director of the Geological Survey of India, said.
The project would affect the vulnerable ecosystem of the area and result in completely altering the Coromadel coast, M. Arunachalam, associate professor, SPK Centre for Environmental Sciences, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, said.
K.S. Ramakrishnan, former managing director of the Poompuhar Shipping Corporation and M. Jeeva and Jesu Rethinam, conveners of the movements, were also present. — Special Correspondent
