CHENNAI: Students of Ethiraj College came up with a novel initiative to inform blood banks in the city of donors in their college on Thursday. They compiled a directory of contact information for students who were willing to donate blood classified based on their blood groups and released it on Thursday.
“You have created history,” Supriya Sahu, project director, Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), told the audience after releasing the directory. Only a small percentage of blood donors were female, she said, because anaemia was rampant among women in the country. An important way to ensure that one did not become anaemic was to ensure that your diet has sufficient iron content.
The directory was an initiative of the Red Ribbon Club at the college.
More than 50,000 students were part of such clubs in the State.
The maximum voluntary blood donations in the country were in West Bengal, followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, Ms. Sahu said.
