Commotion at municipal council meeting

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Ambattur Municipal council meeting on Friday witnessed noisy scenes with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) councillors protesting against the alleged indifference of the Municipal Commissioner.

As soon as the meeting began, AIADMK member M.D. Michaelraj complained that the Commissioner, V. Chakrapani, had insulted his party councillors a couple of days ago, when some of them went to meet him regarding pending works in their respective wards.

Heated arguments

His complaint led to a commotion in the council meeting as members of the ruling party and allies argued with the AIADMK ward members.

Expressing anguish, Municipal Chairman K.N. Sekar said the issue raised by the AIADMK councillor was brought to his notice very late.

He requested the members to take up issues concerning civic works with the officials as per the laid-down norms.

But the opposition members insisted on an apology from the Commissioner, who was present in the hall.

Following this, Mr. Sekar announced all the resolutions, including those pertaining to several improvement works, as passed. The meeting lasted 40 minutes.

The Council passed a resolution condemning Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ram Vilas Vedanti’s remarks against Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

67 resolutions passed

A total of 67 resolutions were passed at the meeting, including proposals for road works in Korattur, Mangalapuram, Ellaiamman Nagar, Balaji Nagar and several other parts of Ambattur at a cost of Rs.1.03 crore.
