Enact stringent law to tackle terror: Venkaiah

HYDERABAD: The United Progressive Alliance government is “lacking a clear action plan” in checking terrorist strikes on places of worship, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader M. Venkaiah Naidu said at a press conference here on Monday. He called for a Chief Ministers’ meet to evolve a consensus.

Mr. Naidu said the Centre should enact a stringent law to tackle terrorism and establish a special federal investigating agency to go into such attacks.

Accusing the government of not being serious about protecting people, Mr. Naidu said that when a “proxy war is being waged by our enemies,” the government chose to scrap POTA and deferred the capital punishment awarded to Afzal Guru, prime suspect in the Parliament attack. These actions sent the wrong signals that the government was “soft towards terrorists.”

He referred to the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. and said there were no such incidents later as the administration had taken stringent action to check terror. In contrast, the government of India was “unmoved.” It should strengthen various agencies and provide them enough funds and also have better coordination with the States.
