Attack on democracy

The blasts were certainly a statement against the people’s desire for democracy. Terrorism has taken deep roots in every part of the world claiming innocent lives. It is time all countries took a strong stand against the menace to root it out.

The massive turnout for Ms Bhutto’s reception reflects the people’s desire for restoration of democracy. No effort should be spared in bringing the real perpetrators of the crime to justice. The fact that the government failed to avert such a colossal tragedy despite the threat of suicide bombings before Ms Bhutto’s arrival is unfortunate.

That the once discredited leader received a rousing welcome from the people shows that Gen. Musharraf has failed to fulfil their expectations. The attempt on Ms Bhutto’s life is bound to evoke popular sympathy for her. The time is ripe for Nawaz Sharif too to return to Pakistan.

The bomb blasts convey the message that terrorists consider the moderates and democracy their extreme enemies. Ms Bhutto’s courage and determination to return to her country despite the threat from the Taliban deserve praise. That she is ready to face any danger in her struggle to restore democracy in Pakistan bears testimony to her leadership qualities.

A. Antony Prabhu,

Thiruvananthapuram
