Thiruvananthapuram bags a double

Principal Correspondent

THALASSERY: Thiruvananthapuram’s dominance was complete at the Sea Star 52nd State senior basketball championship. It scored a splendid double, winning both the titles in front of a full house at the Municipal Stadium here on Sunday.

As the icing on the cake, the award for the best player in both the men’s and women’s sections also went to Thiruvananthapuram — R. Manoj and S.S. Anjana.

In the finals, the men beat Pathanamthitta 94-73, while the women overcame Thrissur 89-73.

The men were too good for Pathanamthittta, but the women were stretched, especially in the first three quarters, by Thrissur. The Thiruvananthapuram women were ahead by just two points after the first quarter (32-34) and were in fact trailing at the end of the second, at 39-43.

That was largely due to some brilliant shooting, especially from the outside, by Thrissur’s Greesha Varghese, who scored five three-pointers. With K. Dhanya also finding the basket consistently, Thrissur was indeed looking dangerous.

But, Thiruvananthapuram showed its experience and class in the final quarter to wrap up the match in style.

Anjana and Sonia Joseph were scoring almost at will and there was little that Thrissur could do to stop Thiruvananthapuram, for which Litty Mathew and Nimmy Thomas made a crucial difference at rebounds.

The results: Men (final): Thiruvananthapuram 94 (R. Manoj 32, T.S. Abhilash 18, Bobit Mathew 16, Vijobi Vakkachan 11) bt Pathanamthitta 73 (A.J. Jazeer 18, V.G. Ajith 15, Anoop Devasia 16, K.R. Nikhil 15).

Semifinal: Pathanamthitta 70 (G.V. Ajith 19, K.R. Nikhil 17, Albin Baby 17) bt Ernakulam 49 (Sunny Thomas 16).

Third place play-off: Thrissur 55 (Geo John 13, Ebi Jose 10, Eudrick Pereira 10) bt Ernakulam 42 (Monish Wilson 16).

Women (final): Thiruvananthapuram 89 (Litty Mathew 23, S.S. Anjana 21, Nimmy Thomas 20, Sonia Joseph 18) bt Thrissur 73 (K. Dhanya 27, Greesha Varghese 23, Greeya Susan Varghese 16).

Semifinal: Thiruvananthpauram 57 (S.S. Anjana 21) bt Kannur 22.

Third place play-off: Kollam 66 (P. Smija 26, K.K. Sushama 13) bt Kannur 44 (M. Thahira 23).
