National senior handball championship from today

Bangalore: The 36th National senior handball championship for men will commence at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here from Monday.

The six-day event will feature 28 teams vying for the honours. Defending champion Punjab is placed in Pool ‘A’ while last year’s runner-up Delhi is placed in Pool ‘B’. The teams are divided into four pools and will play on a league-cum-knockout basis. The teams: Pool ‘A’: Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Railways, Bihar, Pondicherry and Goa; Pool ‘B’: Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Manipur, Kerala, AIU and Gujarat; Pool ‘C’: Services, Uttaranchal, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra; Pool ‘D’: Himachal, Madhya Pradesh, National Handball Academy, Assam, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka.

Premnath to lead

S. Premnath will lead Karnataka in the National senior handball championship for men at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here from November 19 to 24.

The team: S. Premnath (captain), Austin Joyful, Anandkumar, T.P. Shinoj, Srinivasan, Henry Singh, Lisho Augustine, Lakshmundu Amara, Saravana Kumar, Melbi Mathew, Prince John, Rakesh Singh, Wajid Ali, Ananthram, Nagendra and P. Rakhal. Coaches: Arun Kumar and M. Gabriel.

Easy for MEG

Ngeurilal and Gabriel scored a brace each to power MEG to a 5-0 win over Southern Blues in a State super-division league match at the Football Stadium here on Sunday. Ngeurilal scored in the sixth and 63rd minutes and Gabriel scored in the 60th and 66th minutes while Dipan Thapa found the target in the 17th minute.

Earlier in an ‘A’ division league match, HMT defeated BUFC 4-2. Madhesh, Dinesh, Vikram and Benjamin scored for the victor while Sashi and Amit netted for BUFC. Meanwhile in a ‘C’ division league match, Hindu Socials defeated Bangalore Yellow 3-2. Prasanna’s brace and Manish’s 59th minute strike helped Hindu Socials edge ahead while Anand and Zaid scored for Bangalore Yellow.

Arjun clinches title

Arjun Srivatsa, with a better back nine score than David D’Souza, won the 0-8 handicap section of the BT-Honda pro-am Southern golf tournament at the Eagleton Golf Resort here on Saturday.

Arjun and David both finished with 36 points but the former won a ticket to the final to be played in New Delhi with his better return round.

Vishal Bhat will also play in the final in Delhi after winning the 9-16 section. There was a tie in this category too with Vishal and Raj Krishnan having an identical score of 39. However, Vishal’s better back nine score carried him into the final.

Vineet Kshirsagar won the 17-24 handicap division with a score of 37 points. Shane O’Neil, Vishal Bhat, Sumit Rathor and SW Kim bagged the team title with a cumulative score of 105 points. G.S. Ravi, Nandan Heblikar, Desmond Rice and Vineet Kshirsagar were the runners-up.

CMP makes merry

Corps of Military Police defeated Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited 7-3 in the State ‘B’ division hockey league here on Sunday.

Geetha Ranjit Singh scored three goals (third, fifth and 42nd), while Manoj Tirkey (10th), Masib Horo (25th), Kamal Horo (48th) and Pratap Horo (59th) slotted home a goal each. Chengappa (13th), BA Ashoka (35th) and Nazim Bepari (44th) scored for BSNL.

In another tie, Sree Hanuman Blessings (Gadag) beat Rangers Hockey Club 4-3 in a close encounter. Vinod Kattimani (20th), Ravi Gokak (40th), Srinivas (50th) and Praveen Chapramani (55th) were the scorers for SHB, while Mario Dennis (10th), Thomas (30th) and Lawrence (60th) scored for Rangers.

On Saturday, Bombers defeated SHB 5-2 with Suresh (33rd & 52nd), Varun (34th) and Devaiah (57th & 58th) doing the scoring. Kattimani (54th) and Gokak (56th) reduced the margin for SHB.

ASC downs HAL

ASC defeated HAL 60-51 after leading 38-29 at half-time in a men’s match of the State Association Cup basketball championship league match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Sunday.

The results: Men: ASC 60 (Nixon 19, Dharampal 14) bt HAL 51 (Rajkumar 15, Umashankar 11); KSP 80 (Sree Raksha 21, Santosh 19) bt Sports Hostel 55 (Varun 22, Varun 12); Vijaya Bank 60 (Srinivas Gowda 15, Murali Mohan 11) bt JSC 29 (Siddarth 11); MEG 78 (Manoj 26, Subbaiah 19, Lloyd 10) bt Ambedkar 44 (Shreyas 10).

Women: IBBC 31 (Chitra 13) bt KS Hegde, Mangalore 18; South Western Railway 56 (Reshma 11) bt Sports Hostel, Mysore 40 (Sneha 20); Beagles 30 bt JSC 15; Viveknagar SC 55 (Reeth 28) bt Mounts Club 52 (Shikha 24).
